What is a search engine?

A Search engine is a programme or software that searches for and identifies items in a database that corresponds to the keywords specified by the user. Google is one of the most prominent search engine.

Google was invented by two students as part of their university project in 1998. At first it was used as a subdomain under their university website in which the search results were sent to the sumitted email id after 24 hours or more. By 2000, internet was widely used all around the world. On September 11, 2001 followed by the Al-Qaeda attack people started searching on google about the news but the results for their search was disappointing.

The engineers of google point out that the reason for the disappointing reasults was that, not all the available web pages were crawlable to google.

3 Process in Search Engine

  • Crawling.
  • Caching.
  • Indexing.

Crawling:The process by which a programme called bot scan a new or updated page.
Caching:The process of saving the snapshot of the page in to the database according to their category.
Indexing:The process of retrieving of the search results.
Now, inorder to crawl every web page in the internet the google engineers published 32 pages starter guide document called "SEO Starter Guide".Thus search engine optimization started.
